Surat al-Baqarah… The Surah of Disclosure and Bringing the Hidden to Light
The Qur’an from Within
“Baqr” is splitting open and revealing, while “qabr” is concealing; can the Qur’an’s longest surah thus be read as patterns of disclosure concerning humanity, Satan, history, and corruption?
It is not merely the longest surah in the Noble Qur’an, nor is it only a surah of rulings and legislation. Rather, upon deep reflection, it appears to be a surah of “disclosure”: it discloses the human being, Satan, history, corruption, and what is conducted in secret. If we reflect on its name, we will find a remarkable secret.
Why Was It Named Surat al-Baqarah?
The word “baqr” in Arabic means splitting something open and revealing what is inside it. One says: he baqara the earth, meaning he split it open and brought out what it contained; and he baqara his abdomen, meaning he split it open and revealed what was inside. Its opposite is “qabr”: concealing something within the earth.
Between “baqr” and “qabr” there is only one letter, yet their meanings are opposed: baqr is revealing, and qabr is concealing. Here a profound symbolism emerges: it has been reported that Satan flees from the house in which Surat al-Baqarah is recited, as though a house in which it is recited is not a grave, but a place where light is disclosed and concealment is driven out.
Disclosing the Categories of Human Beings
The surah opens by dividing people into three categories: believers, unbelievers, and hypocrites. The longest description is devoted to the hypocrites, because the unbeliever is manifest, whereas the hypocrite is concealed; the surah thus comes to disclose him.
﴿وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ﴾ (Among people are those who say, “We believe in God and the Last Day,” yet they are not believers.) [البقرة: ٨]
Thus, from the very beginning of the surah: disclosure of the inward.
Disclosing the First Conspiracy against the Human Being
Then comes the story of Adam and Iblis, where God discloses the origin of the war against the human being. Iblis said, ﴿لَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ﴾ (I will surely lead them all astray), and God said, ﴿إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ فَاتَّخِذُوهُ عَدُوًّا﴾ (Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy). There is, then, an enemy working in secret.
Devils among Jinn and Humans… A Network of Misguidance
The Qur’an does not make the battle one against jinn alone, but says:
﴿شَيَاطِينَ الْإِنسِ وَالْجِنِّ يُوحِي بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ﴾ (Devils among humans and jinn, inspiring one another) [الأنعام: ١١٢]
The scene thus takes this form: Iblis leads the project; his progeny undertake whispering and temptation; and human devils carry it out on earth. Here we understand His words, ﴿أَفَتَتَّخِذُونَهُ وَذُرِّيَّتَهُ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِن دُونِي﴾ (Will you then take him and his progeny as allies instead of Me?); that is, there is a project extending across generations.
Disclosing the Corruption of the Children of Israel
The largest portion of the surah concerns the Children of Israel, because the surah “splits open” their history, disclosing: distortion of scripture, breach of covenants, killing the prophets, worshipping the calf, belief in jibt and taghut, concealing the truth, love of this world, and their saying, “We hear and we disobey.”
﴿أَفَكُلَّمَا جَاءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ بِمَا لَا تَهْوَىٰ أَنفُسُكُمُ اسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ﴾ (Is it that whenever a messenger came to you with what your souls did not desire, you grew arrogant?) [البقرة: ٨٧]
The Story of the Cow Itself… Disclosing a Hidden Crime
The story began with a slain person whose case was unresolved, each party accusing the other. God commanded them to slaughter a cow, then ﴿فَقُلْنَا اضْرِبُوهُ بِبَعْضِهَا﴾ (So We said, “Strike him with part of it”). The slain person then arose and revealed the killer.
The cow, then, is an instrument for bringing the truth to light, and this is why the surah was named after it.
Disclosing the Trial of Wealth and Usury
The surah disclosed the most dangerous systems of economic corruption: usury, debts, spending, almsgiving, and zakat.
﴿يَمْحَقُ اللَّهُ الرِّبَا وَيُرْبِي الصَّدَقَاتِ﴾ (God effaces usury and causes alms to grow.) [البقرة: ٢٧٦]
It is as though it discloses one of the pillars of corruption at the end of time.
Disclosing the Trial of Magic
In the context of Harut and Marut, the surah also disclosed magic, the separation of spouses, and the use of the hidden to corrupt the manifest.
Disclosing the Battle over the Holy Land
The change of the qiblah from Jerusalem to the Kaaba is not merely a change of direction, but a disclosure of a doctrinal struggle over land, identity, and divine election.
Disclosing the Regularities of Victory and Defeat
The story of Talut and Jalut discloses a law: a believing few defeat a corrupt multitude.
The Red Heifer, the Temple, and the End of Time
In hardline Jewish religious thought, there is a belief in the return of the Jews to the land, control over Jerusalem, the appearance of the red heifer, purification with its ashes, the restoration of sacrifices, the building of the Third Temple, the appearance of the Messiah, the war of Gog and Magog, and rule from Jerusalem.
Here lies the remarkable paradox: some make the “cow” a means of reviving the Temple project, while in the Qur’an the “cow” itself serves to disclose the corruption of those who cling to rituals and abandon the essence of obedience.
Applying This to the Present
When we examine the religious thought associated with the “Temple,” we find an internal conception that speaks of symbolic purification rituals, the rebuilding of the Temple, anticipation of a messianic age, and a vision of major wars at the end of history.
In the modern political reality of the Middle East: the expansion of war from Gaza to Lebanon, Syria, and Iran; the entry of the United States into the conflict; rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and their global impact; and the clear interconnection of the fronts.
These events disclose one thing: conflict in the world is no longer confined to local spheres or separate confrontations. Rather, it has become a complex, interconnected network in which interests, influence, and fronts intersect at an accelerating pace, to the point that much of what was conducted in secret has drawn closer to public disclosure.
From the Qur’anic perspective, the Qur’an describes this extension of tribulation through the existence of “devils among jinn and humans” who inspire one another, indicating the interweaving of hidden temptation with manifest human action, as systems of deception and corruption take shape and exchange influence and support. With this extension, events move toward further gradual disclosure, such that true motives emerge and the intertwined relationships among active powers are laid bare.
Is All This Connected to the End of Time?
Through reflection, we find that the surah discloses patterns of corruption that may reach their peak at the end of time: distortion of religion, concealing the truth, usury, magic, monopolizing land, killing the innocent, claiming divine election, and following taghut.
It is as though the message is: when corruption reaches its peak… God permits an event that “splits open” the earth and brings out what was hidden within it. This is why Surat al-Baqarah is not merely a surah to be recited, but a surah that discloses.
Conclusion
Surat al-Baqarah appears to present “regularities of disclosure”: disclosure of the human being, Satan, history, corruption, the economy, conflict, and what is conducted in secret.
Correspondingly, what is happening in modern reality can be read as a political manifestation of these regularities: the world’s transition from a phase of managing conflicts in the shadows to a phase in which they become exposed on the surface, where alliances emerge, interests are laid bare, and fronts become more complex.
