Surat al-Qiyamah: Shaping Human Awareness before the Ultimate Truth
The Qur’an from Within
An analytical, contemplative reading of why human beings flee from truth, the testimony of conscience, and the moment when everything is laid bare.
Surat al-Qiyamah is among the surahs that most deeply address the psychological and intellectual depths of the human being. It does not merely establish resurrection; it reveals why human beings flee from truth in the first place, and how they experience an inner conflict between their innate disposition and their desire, and between their deep-seated certainty and their persistent attempts at denial.
First: Affirming the Reality of Resurrection and the Day of Resurrection
﴿لَا أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ وَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ﴾ (I swear by the Day of Resurrection, and I swear by the self-reproaching soul.) [القيامة: ١-٢]
God thus connects the greater resurrection outside the human being with the lesser resurrection within: conscience.
Why did God choose “the self-reproaching soul”? Because it is the inward evidence for the existence of truth. A person may lie with their tongue and follow their desire, yet inwardly feels blame and reproach upon doing wrong. This means that God has placed within the human being a witness against them.
Just as there is an external reckoning on the Day of Resurrection, there is also an inner tribunal in your depths that bears witness against you now.
﴿بَلِ الْإِنسَانُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ﴾ (Rather, the human being is a witness against himself.) [القيامة: ١٤]
The Qur’an thus consistently connects innate disposition, inward awareness, and the sense of guilt with divine truth.
Second: God’s Absolute Power to Reconstitute the Human Being
﴿أَيَحْسَبُ الْإِنسَانُ أَلَّن نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُ بَلَىٰ قَادِرِينَ عَلَىٰ أَن نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ﴾ (Does the human being think that We will not gather his bones? Indeed, We are able even to fashion his fingertips.) [القيامة: ٣-٤]
Why did God specifically choose “fingertips”? The fingertips are among the body’s most minute and distinctive details. In our modern age, human beings have discovered that fingerprints do not match among billions of people, as though each person has a unique identity that is never repeated.
Here the deeper significance emerges: God is not merely saying that He will recreate the human being in general terms, but that He will restore that person in all their precise and unique details. Your personality, constitution, identity, and distinctive fingerprint are all preserved with God. This demolishes the illusion of being lost or dissolving into nothingness after death.
﴿وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَبْدَأُ الْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُ وَهُوَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيْهِ﴾ (It is He who originates creation, then repeats it, and that is easier for Him.) [الروم: ٢٧]
Third: Why Human Beings Deny the Hereafter
﴿بَلْ يُرِيدُ الْإِنسَانُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُ﴾ (Rather, the human being wishes to continue in transgression in the time ahead of him.) [القيامة: ٥]
The surah reveals that the problem is not a lack of evidence, but the desire to escape responsibility. Sometimes a person denies the truth not because they cannot see it, but because they do not want its consequences.
Today we see many people who recognize the corruption of existing reality, feel an inner contradiction, and perceive the emptiness of material life, yet flee into incessant entertainment, media noise, social conformity, and herd logic.
Why? Because confronting truth requires changing oneself, assuming responsibility, and freeing oneself from desire and fear. Human beings often prefer temporary psychological comfort to burdensome truth. This is why people follow the group even when it is misguided: the herd offers a false sense of security.
Fourth: Scenes of the Day of Resurrection
﴿فَإِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُ وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُ وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ﴾ (When sight is dazzled, the moon is eclipsed, and the sun and moon are brought together.) [القيامة: ٧-٩]
Why did God mention the sun and moon? Because they are the two greatest symbols of cosmic order, time, and life. Human beings live their entire lives by the regularity of night and day, the sun and moon, time and cosmic cycles. When this order is disrupted on the Day of Resurrection, the human being realizes that the world they had regarded as stable has come to an end.
﴿يَقُولُ الْإِنسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ﴾ (On that day the human being will say, “Where is the escape?”) [القيامة: ١٠]
Because the truth from which a person fled throughout life is now directly before them. Human beings flee from reckoning, from confronting their deeds, from the collapse of illusions, and from the disintegration of the image of “control” by which they lived. But: ﴿كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ﴾ (No indeed! There is no refuge.); that is, there is no shelter, no stronghold, and no escape.
Fifth: The Human Being as a Witness against Himself
﴿بَلِ الْإِنسَانُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُ﴾ (Rather, the human being is a witness against himself, even if he offers his excuses.) [القيامة: ١٤-١٥]
If a person knows the truth, why resort to excuses? Because they experience a conflict between the innate disposition that recognizes truth and the self that wishes to evade it. Excuses are not always intended to persuade others; sometimes they are meant to silence the inner conscience.
This is why a person justifies injustice, negligence, subservience, and hypocrisy to themselves, so that they can carry on without confronting themselves. Yet the Qur’an reveals that none of this changes the inward truth.
Sixth: Steadying the Prophet during the Descent of Revelation
﴿لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُ وَقُرْآنَهُ﴾ (Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it. It is for Us to gather it and recite it.) [القيامة: ١٦-١٧]
Why does this verse appear in the midst of Surat al-Qiyamah? Because the surah speaks of absolute truth, reckoning, and the revelation that discloses truth. Here God reassures the Prophet that this Qur’an is preserved by God’s own will.
The important implication is this: God, not human beings, is responsible for gathering the Qur’an, preserving it, and explaining it. This is why the verse appears amid the discussion of resurrection: revelation is the authoritative proof on the basis of which people will be called to account.
Seventh: The Root of Human Deviation: Love of the Immediate
﴿كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ وَتَذَرُونَ الْآخِرَةَ﴾ (No indeed! Rather, you love the immediate life and leave aside the Hereafter.) [القيامة: ٢٠-٢١]
God did not say “you love this world,” but rather “the immediate”—that is, what is swift and temporary. This is a profound psychological description: human beings incline toward what offers immediate pleasure, quick comfort, and instant gratification, even if it is temporary and destructive in the long term. The Hereafter, by contrast, requires patience, awareness, sacrifice, and a perspective that reaches beyond the present moment. Here the Qur’an reveals the roots of almost all human behavior.
Eighth: Faces on the Day of Resurrection
﴿وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ﴾ (Faces on that day will be radiant, looking toward their Lord.) [القيامة: ٢٢-٢٣]
Here faces reflect the inward truth: tranquility, contentment, and certainty. Other faces, meanwhile, ﴿تَظُنُّ أَن يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ﴾ (expect that a crushing calamity will befall them.); that is, they perceive the imminence of collapse and punishment. On the Day of Resurrection, the face becomes a mirror of the truth that had been concealed within.
Ninth: The Decisive Moment of Death
﴿كَلَّا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ التَّرَاقِيَ وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ﴾ (No indeed! When it reaches the collarbones, and it is said, “Who can heal?”) [القيامة: ٢٦-٢٧]
Here the surah describes the moment of the human being’s collapse before death: strength vanishes, arrogance falls away, illusion is exposed, and true realization begins. This is why He says: ﴿وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ الْفِرَاقُ﴾ (And he realizes that it is the parting.); that is, he becomes certain that the journey has ended and truth has begun.
Conclusion
Surat al-Qiyamah develops a momentous central message: the human being was not created in vain and has within an innate disposition that bears witness to truth, yet flees because of a love of desire and the immediate. Revelation came to awaken the human being, and resurrection is the moment when truth is fully laid bare. On that day, there is no escaping confrontation with oneself and one’s deeds.
﴿أَلَيْسَ ذَٰلِكَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَىٰ أَن يُحْيِيَ الْمَوْتَىٰ﴾ (Is He not able to give life to the dead?) [القيامة: ٤٠]
It is as though the entire surah leads the human being to this final conclusion: He who created you with such complexity, placed awareness and conscience within you, and governed this vast cosmos… how could resurrecting you once more be beyond His power?
