Pharaoh of the Age: Patterns of Tyranny in History, from the Qur’an to Contemporary Reality
Power, Religion, and Civilization
A recurring pattern: a power rises, then becomes corrupt, then is gradually drawn toward its downfall, then suddenly collapses from within.
Narratives as Laws, Not Entertainment
The Holy Qur’an did not present narratives for entertainment, but to disclose the laws of history and the regularities governing the course of nations:
﴿لَقَدْ كَانَ فِي قَصَصِهِمْ عِبْرَةٌ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ﴾ (Indeed, in their narratives is a lesson for those possessed of understanding.) [يوسف: ١١١]
That is, the fate of earlier nations constitutes a pattern that recurs when its causes recur. Studying the Qur’an reveals a consistent pattern: the emergence of a great power, then ascendancy in the land, then corruption and arrogance, then a divine drawing of that power gradually toward its downfall, then sudden collapse. This pattern recurred with Pharaoh, Nimrod, Qarun, and the peoples of ʿAd and Thamud; it is a model that can also explain the reality of tyrannical powers in the modern age.
Ascendancy in the Land
﴿إِنَّ فِرْعَوْنَ عَلَا فِي الْأَرْضِ﴾ (Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land.) [القصص: ٤]
Ascendancy is not confined to military strength; it also encompasses political influence, economic control, influence over the media and intellectual life, and the imposition of one’s will upon peoples.
In an analytical reading of modern reality, the global Zionist movement can be regarded as one contemporary example of the “Pharaoh of the age,” in terms of consolidating political influence within international decision-making institutions, controlling the global economy through major financial institutions, influencing the media and culture, and seeking to expand regional influence in accordance with what some call the “Greater Israel” project.
This is an analytical hypothesis, not a definitive judgment: any power that exceeds the natural bounds of justice and fairness falls within this model.
The Stage of Gradual Enticement toward Downfall: Power before Collapse
The Qur’an warns against assuming that power is evidence of God’s approval:
﴿سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ﴾ (We shall gradually draw them toward their downfall from where they do not know, and I shall grant them respite; indeed, My plan is firm.) [القلم: ٤٤-٤٥]
This gradual enticement toward downfall means that power may reach an unprecedented peak: immense wealth, global influence, scientific and technological advancement, and military superiority. Yet all of this may be a period of respite before collapse:
﴿فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَبْوَابَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ﴾ (We opened for them the gates of all things.) [الأنعام: ٤٤]
That is, complete empowerment often precedes collapse; this is the apex of the pyramid before the fall.
The Moment of Civilizational Hubris
Every tyrannical power has passed through a moment in which it believed itself above everything; Pharaoh: ﴿أَلَيْسَ لِي مُلْكُ مِصْرَ﴾ (Does the dominion of Egypt not belong to me?), and Qarun: ﴿إِنَّمَا أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَى عِلْمٍ عِندِي﴾ (I was given it only because of knowledge I possess.). In the modern age, any “Pharaoh of the age” may believe that its absolute power over the world has become a reality, whether through money, the media, or political influence.
Inevitable Collapse: From Within First
﴿وَمَا ظَلَمْنَاهُمْ وَلَٰكِن كَانُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ﴾ (We did not wrong them, but they were wronging themselves.) [النحل: ١١٨]
That is, internal corruption, contradictions, hubris, and injustice bring about the collapse of tyrannical powers before any external power intervenes.
Instruments of Hegemony in the Contemporary World
Regional wars and conflicts: Redrawing geopolitical maps and draining states’ resources. Sectarian and religious agitation: Exploiting internal divisions to weaken societies. Economic and financial influence: Vast institutions controlling markets and international policies. The media and the manufacture of narratives: Controlling public opinion and directing the narrative. Elite networks and closed organizations: Directing international policies through closed intellectual associations.
Within this hypothesis, all these instruments can be exploited to consolidate global influence while keeping the ummah preoccupied with its internal disputes.
A Clear Qur’anic Principle
﴿وَتِلْكَ الْأَيَّامُ نُدَاوِلُهَا بَيْنَ النَّاسِ﴾ (And those days We alternate among people.) [آل عمران: ١٤٠]
That is, control does not remain with any nation or power forever, however great its influence or hegemony may become.
Analytical Conclusion
Any power, however great its ascendancy in the land, is gradually drawn toward its downfall and then collapses suddenly if it exceeds the bounds of justice. Power is not evidence of being in the right, and empowerment may be a test. Injustice carries the seeds of its own collapse, whether in the past or in the modern age. Internal chaos facilitates control over nations.
According to the patterns of tyranny identified by the Qur’an thousands of years ago, every “Pharaoh of the age” passes through the same stages: ascendancy, then gradual enticement toward downfall, then collapse.
